Two Rantoul men arrested in Campustown beating

RANTOUL — Police have arrested two men who were wanted in connection with a Champaign fight that sent a man to the hospital early Sunday.

Rantoul police on Monday arrested Jonathan Hughes, 22, and Sahr Lebbie, 21, both of Rantoul. Both were in custody on $50,000 bond each, according to Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn.

Zachary Lingard, 20, of Urbana was arrested Sunday in connection with the same incident.

Dunn said on Monday that police were called to the 500 block of East Green Street at 2:50 a.m. and found an ambulance crew treating a 21-year-old man.

Dunn said the victim and a friend left a bar and were headed on Green toward Fourth Street when they saw a man they knew arguing with a woman.

The victim tried to calm the man down. That man, identified by police as Lingard, hit the victim. Two other men then joined in and hit him, then left the area.

Lingard was arrested for aggravated battery.

Dunn said the victim was in good condition on Monday afternoon.
