UPDATED: Credit union robbed in Champaign

UPDATED 12:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Another financial institution in Champaign has been the target of a robbery.

The Central Illinois Credit Union was robbed at 2106 West John St., C, around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said two men went in the building. One showed a handgun and told the four employees and one customers to get on the ground. The two left with an undisclosed amount of cash and left, headed west on foot. No physical injuries were reported.

A K-9 unit tracked the men west to Country Fair Drive, then north, but lost the scent.

The first of the two robbers is described as a black man 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 30 years old and with a medium build. He was wearing a blue long-sleeved T-shirt, a Chicago Blackhawks hat and dark pants.

The second robber was described as a black man 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 30 and with a stocky build. He was wearing a grey hooded zip-up sweatshirt, a dark cap, dark pants and sunglasses.

The credit union is north of Centennial High School.  Both Centennial and neighboring Jefferson Middle School were placed on "soft lockdown," which means students can move around in the building but can't leave.  The lockdowns at both schools have since been lifted.

It's the third robbery of a financial institution in Champaign in less thn a week.

Last Thursday, a man robbed First Financial Bank, 1611 S. Prospect Ave., C, of an undisclosed amount of cash. And The Hickory Point Bank, 701 Devonshire Drive, C, was robbed shortly after 3 p.m. Friday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Champaign police at 351-4545, Champaign County Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS or by texting CCTIP and the information to CRIMES (274637).

Since this is the third one in about a week, shouldn't we be stationing an undercover police officer in every bank for now?  Champaign, Urbana, UI, County and State should all be pooling resources to put a stop to this.  One of these incidents is going to go south and an innocent person is going to get hurt.

There definitely seems to be a trend of the smaller banks getting targeted.  I honestly can say that I don't feel as safe now going into a smaller less staffed bank.  One bank I go to buzzes you in now before you enter the lobby!  I am all for extra secuirty measures to help protect the safety of all the people at the bank.
