Rantoul woman dies after being hit by a car outside Market Place Mall

CHAMPAIGN — A Rantoul woman died Wednesday when a car backed over her in a parking lot at Market Place Mall in Champaign.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Eugenia Crites, 64, of Rantoul was pronounced dead at 3:54 p.m. Wednesday in the emergency room of Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said a teenage male was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima when it backed over the woman in a parking lot near the southeast corner of Macy's at 3:24 p.m.

She said Ms. Crites was badly injured and was lying on the ground when police arrived. She was still breathing when she was taken by ambulance to Carle.

Dunn said police took the teen, who was not reported injured, in for questioning.

Dunn said the Nissan also hit two unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot.
