Urbana man faces weapons charges
URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly opened fire on a man at a Champaign apartment complex Sunday afternoon is due back in court in July.
Malcolm U. Jones, 25, who listed an address in the 400 block of East Fairlawn Drive, was criminally charged Monday with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of weapons by a felon following his arrest Sunday.
A Champaign police report said about 1:45 p.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old Champaign man was walking in the parking lot of the Garden Village apartments when Jones drove through the lot in a car and allegedly fired four or five shots through the passenger window in the man's direction. The man was not struck.
The alleged victim's girlfriend saw what happened. She told police the incident stemmed from bad blood between Jones and the victim, both of whom know her.
Police found a .380-caliber shell casing on Cynthia Drive near the apartments which had a defect that made it distinctive. When police located Jones in Urbana in the same car about an hour later, they found two .380-caliber casings under the back seat with the same kind of distinctive defect on them, a police report said.
Jones was then taken back to the scene, where the victim and his girlfriend identified him as the man who fired the shots. He was arrested.
Jones was also charged Monday with an unrelated aggravated battery that allegedly occurred in Urbana on Sept. 23.
In that case, Jones is alleged to have struck a 22-year-old Urbana man in the head with a tire iron outside a business in the 900 block of West University Avenue.
The man had to have four staples to close a gash to his head, the report said.
Jones was not identified as the alleged attacker until about three weeks later when the victim picked him out of a photo array.
Jones is being held in lieu of $300,000 bond in both cases and is scheduled to be back in court July 3.
