Forum to cover Clinton landfill permit request
URBANA — Officials will convene a public forum on Thursday (May 17) to inform locals about a pending application for a landfill in Clinton to bury chemical waste at a site above the Mahomet Aquifer, the source of central Illinois' drinking water.
The meeting is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Beckman Institute, 405 N. Mathews Ave., U.
Area government officials have been fighting the permit that they say would pose a risk to the purity of the drinking water. Officials with Clinton Landfill say the unit they have built to hold the waste meets or exceeds all federal and state regulations.
Scheduled speakers for Thursday night's public forum include George Roadcap, a hydrogeologist with the Illinois State Water Survey; Dave Holt, the president of a Clinton-based watchdog group that has been fighting the permit; and Champaign Assistant City Attorney Joe Hooker.
The forum will include their presentations and a question-and-answer session.
