Police memorial events scheduled Thursday
URBANA — Main Street in downtown Urbana between Broadway Avenue and Vine Street and Walnut between Main and Water streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday for the police memorial that will take place on the plaza of the Champaign County Courthouse.
The courthouse service begins at 12:15 p.m. and features remarks by retired Champaign County Judge J.G. Townsend. That service follows a separate one at 11:30 a.m. at the police and fire memorial in Champaign's West Side Park near the corner of Church and State streets.
That service honors Champaign's two officers killed in the line of duty: Robert Tatman, who died Nov. 25, 1967, and Thomas Dodsworth, who died July 6, 1913. Both were shot.
At noon, a police vehicle processional will travel to the Champaign County Courthouse.
The service at the courthouse is to honor four officers and one canine partner who died in Champaign County and one who died in Vermilion County.
They are Illinois State Police Sgt. Rodney Miller, who died in an auto accident May 12, 2006; Dutch, a Rantoul police department dog, who fell to his death Sept. 13, 2001; Champaign County sheriff's Deputy Glen Hewerdine, who died in an auto accident Dec. 22, 1962; and FBI Special Agent William Ramsey, who was shot in Vermilion County while pursuing a bank robber near Penfield and died May 4, 1938.
