Unit 7 offices to move to junior high building

TOLONO — The Unit 7 school district's central administrative offices will be moving.

The school board this week approved spending up to $168,000 to have St. Louis-based performance contractor Control Technology and Solutions move the offices to the Unity Junior High School building, which shares a campus with Unity High School. Of that, $137,595 will be spent on renovations, and the rest will be spent on furniture and flooring.

The expenditure would leave the district with about $250,000 left over from the $3.5 million the district bonded for additions at the high school. The bond is being paid back with revenue from the county sales tax.

The district offices are currently located in a building at 408 N. Central St. that the district rents from the Tolono Park District. Over four years, the district will save about $55,000 in rent expenses, according to Superintendent Andrew Larson. School board meetings will be held in the school's library.

Renovations to the high school office will be postponed until next summer.

Part of the high school addition project is a 4,500-square-foot addition that will include an expansion of the cafeteria and kitchen, and Unity High School Principal Phil Morrison presented the board with a proposal for a cafeteria redesign. In addition to being a place for students to eat lunch, the cafeteria is used by students eating breakfast and doing homework before school, by study halls, for selling concessions during athletic events and for community events, Morrison said.
