Police looking for children man may have contacted
URBANA — Urbana police Saturday arrested a Greenup man after he allegedly tried to lure a child into his pickup truck. Police are looking for children with whom he may have had contact.
Lt. Richard Surles said police were sent to the 1300 block of Silver Street about 1:50 p.m. for a report of a man trying to lure children into his pickup truck with a puppy or small dog. Although he left the area before they got there, police found him about 3 p.m. and arrested him.
The man was identified as Bennie A. Hays, 72.
Surles said a woman saw the man's interaction with children from afar and yelled at them, prompting him to take off as well as the children.
Police would like anyone with children in the area of Philo and Silver who may have been outside or had contact with the man between 1:30 and 2 p.m. to contact them.
He was driving a white older Ford pickup truck. Hays was wearing a blue plaid shirt and blue jeans. He had a small, gray and black long haired dog in the truck with him.
Witnesses described one of the children the man was attempting to lure to his vehicle as a black female, between 3 and 6 years old, wearing a red T-shirt with some printing on it and purple shorts. There were two or three other black male children with her that were in the same age range.
If your children or visitors had contact or spoke with this man, please contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 so that an officer can come speak to you and the child.
