Carle nurse gets state award for lifetime achievement

URBANA — Kids know her as her "Nurse Patty."

Those who work with Patty Metzler in health care and emergency services know her as a leader who has dedicated much of her professional life to childhood injury prevention.

Metzler, a Carle registered nurse for 34 years and a 54-year-old Philo resident, was honored Thursday morning with a Ron W. Lee, MD Excellence in Pediactric Care Award for lifetime achievement.

The award was presented at Carle, and comes from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program.

There are just three recipients chosen each year in Illinois for the awards, with two other awards made in the categories of community service and clinical excellence, said Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Sabrina Miller.

Metzler is the emergency department pediatric coordinator and interpersonal violence and safety education coordinator at Carle. She is also coordinator of the local Risk Watch program that provides safety education for Champaign County school children.
