Fire closes Monticello bike path

MONTICELLO — A bike path over the Sangamon River in Monticello is closed for repairs after a fire was apparently set on the bridge.

According to Floyd Allsop, superintendent of city services for Monticello, the trestle was reported to be on fire Wednesday evening.

"Since there was no camp fire nearby and no (inclement) weather, we assume the fire was set," Allsop said in a release. "There is already talk on Facebook about it so I am sure the Police Department will find the responsible party(s)."

The east 100 to 150 feet of the trestle burned but the iron bridge over the river was saved.

The Monticello and Mid Piatt fire departments responded.

"It was a difficult fire to contend with since water was limited and access was extremely tight," Allsop said.

"The path is closed near the bridge/trestle until we can figure out what repairs/replacement are needed and the cost associated with this."
