No arrests made in connection with fatal shooting in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police say no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at an apartment complex on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Monday in Urbana show that Torrie Smedley, 20, of Champaign died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Northrup said an inquest may be held at a later date.

According to a Champaign police report, officers were called to the Country Brook Apartments in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, C., at 2:31 p.m. Sunday after METCAD received a report of a shooting there.

Mr. Smedley was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Northrup said Mr. Smedley was pronounced dead in the hospital's operating room at 3:58 p.m. Sunday.

While most details of what happened that afternoon have not been released, Champaign Police Lt. Robert Rea said only one shot was fired and that nobody had been arrested as of Thursday evening.

Rea said a second man, who hasn't been identified, was upset about what happened and was also taken to the hospital on Sunday for treatment.

No description of the shooter or the type of gun used was yet available from police on Thursday night.

"We're still investigating it and following up on tips as they come in," Rea said. "We have been back to the scene and searched the residence for evidence. We have also canvassed the neighborhood for evidence."

Northrup said the incident remains under investigation by his office and the Champaign Police Department.
