Homer teen dies from crash injuries

UPDATED 4:55 p.m.

HOMER — A Homer teen died Saturday afternoon as a result of injuries he sustained in a single-vehicle crash just northwest of Homer late Friday night.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Brandon Umbarger, 17, died at 3:16 p.m. in the surgical intensive care unit at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana where he was taken following an accident that occurred about 11:10 p.m.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Cunningham said Mr. Umbarger was driving north on County Road 2600 E near 1150 N when his car went over the crest of a hill, left the road, then apparently came back on. The car skidded out of control, coming to rest off the road on a grass-covered embankment.

Cunningham said Mr. Umbarger was alone in the car and remained inside it following the crash, which occurred less than a mile from Mr. Umbarger's home.

Deputies continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident. Northrup said he may conduct an inquest later.

Mr. Umbarger had just completed his junior year at Heritage High School in Homer, where he played basketball and baseball and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Farmers of America.
