Fourth candidate seeking Champaign council seat

CHAMPAIGN — A fourth candidate has entered the race for the District 3 city council seat as the deadline for doing so nears.

Dustin Heuerman, a four-year Champaign resident with a law enforcement background, said he wants to be a younger voice on the city council.

The 31-year-old said he has not necessarily had any issues with how current city council members have handled any particular situation, but he wants to make sure younger residents' perspectives are represented.

"I've noticed there are a lot of, I guess, older board members," Heuerman said.

Heuerman spent five months as police chief with the 1,224-population village of Atwood before taking a job as a Champaign County sheriff's deputy. He now works as a criminal justice instructor at Lake Land College in Mattoon.

Ultimately, he said he intends to "make sure to have an open ear to the citizens."

He joins retired teacher Lynn Anderson, former council member Vic McIntosh and Merry-Ann's Diner owner Tony Pomonis in the group seeking an appointment to the District 3 seat.

The incumbent, Kyle Harrison, announced this month that he will be resigning on June 15 before moving to a new home outside the district. Council members plan to appoint a new member from the group of applicants on June 19.

The city is accepting applications for the seat until noon on Friday. Council members will publicly interview the candidates during the first half of June before making their selection.

The appointee will be entitled to the seat until the end of Harrison's unexpired term in May 2013. Voters will select a candidate to hold the office after that.
