Burglars do heavy damage in Penfield house burglary

PENFIELD — Champaign County sheriff's deputies are investigating a rural Penfield break-in that left a couple's home heavily damaged.

Sgt. Dan Coile said sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, someone broke into a home on County Road 2600 E.

Coile said the woman living there told deputies she locked the home when she left. When she got home, she found an outdoor glass patio table shattered and two separate doors to the home standing open.

Inside, the burglar or burglars ransacked several rooms, including going through personal papers, breaking glasses on the kitchen floor, and slashing a couch, chair and a mattress with a knife and pulling out stuffing.

A bathroom window was also broken. Among the items stolen were several pieces of jewelry, a camera and a video camera recorder.

Deputies estimated the damage and value of the stolen items at $4,405.

Anyone with information on this break-in is asked to call the sheriff's office at 217-384-1213 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.
