Urbana Fire Department maintains insurance rating

URBANA — Fire-insurance rates for Urbana homeowners will stay as low as possible after officials were notified by the Insurance Services Office that the city's fire department has maintained its Class 2 rating.

The ISO reviews are infrequent — the last inspection was in 2002, when the Urbana department first got its Class 2 rating.

ISO inspectors visited the Urbana department this year to examine items such as equipment, training, staffing, the city's water system and the strategic locations of fire stations, Fire Chief Mike Dilley said.

The office scores fire defense on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best possible rating. Dilley said the Class 2 rating means the department is providing high-level service.

City officials are not trying to move up to the Class 1 rating, which would require more fire employees.

"The amount of money that it would cost us to do that is not beneficial for the citizens," Dilley said.

Moving up to the Class 1 rating would not affect residential fire-insurance rates, Dilley said. It would lower rates for commercial properties.

Urbana's rating matches Champaign's — the Champaign department's Class 2 rating also was reaffirmed earlier this year.

You should contact the Sidney Fire Protection District Board of Trustee's then or even better attend one of their meetings and ask them about this rating. It is your tax dollars at work that funds that department and an involved citizen should be aware of what their fire department is all about.
