Man charged with aggravated DUI
URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly hit a car in Campustown while drunk and kept on going late Thursday has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to a Champaign police report, witnesses saw a motorist hit an unoccupied Toyota Corolla in a parking lot at 51 E. Green St., about 11:40 p.m.
The driver of the car that hit the unoccupied car — later identified as Juan Badillo-Merino, 31, of the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive, Champaign — was allegedly driving in circles before he hit the car. He then left the lot.
A witness got his license plate and called police, who tried to pull him over near McKinley and Bradley avenues. He did not initially stop, but made an abrupt turn before pulling up on a sidewalk, the report said.
Police said his cell phone was on at the time of the collision.
Badillo-Merino admitted to an officer he had been drinking beer and had been in an accident.
Judge Richard Klaus set Badillo-Merino's bond at $5,000 and ordered him to be back in court July 18.
