Notification glitch noted on Urbana electric opt-out letters
URBANA — Officials say they have fixed a glitch after hundreds of required letters were not sent to Urbana households that will be enrolled in a program that will save customers' money on their power bills.
Mike Monson, chief of staff to Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing, said on Thursday that about 585 letters informing residents of their right to "opt out" of the municipal electric aggregation program did not make it to their homes.
Those letters will go out in about two weeks, and those customers will still have time to opt out if they do not want to participate in the program. Most residents will be automatically enrolled and need to do nothing to receive a 36 percent savings on the electric supply portion of their power bills.
Most Urbana households should have gotten the letters. The only customers that should have been excluded from the first round of notification are those that have already signed a contract with a different retail electric supplier, those on a "power-smart" pricing plan or those who heat with electric.
"Certain accounts weren't going to get letters, and somehow these people were included," Monson said.
Those who heat with electric may be getting opt-out letters later this summer, Monson said. Those on the hourly pricing plan may get opt-in letters later.
Homefield Energy, the retail electric supplier which will begin to provide residents' electricity at a lower rate this summer, has taken responsibility for the error, Monson said.
A spokesperson for the company did not return messages seeking comment on Thursday afternoon.
