CHAMPAIGN — The detour for the upcoming closure of Kirby Avenue over Interstate 57 has been changed.
Kirby will be closed beginning Monday through much of the summer while the I-57 overpass is repaired.
The original east-west detour, using Windsor Road, will remain available for cars, but vehicles weighing 20 tons or more will not be able to use Windsor, because of weight limits on the bridge carrying Windsor over I-57; they'll have to use Curtis Road instead, according to a city release.
Some lane closures will happen on I-57 during the work as well, which is expected to last into early August.
I get confused about the names of the exits. Curtis Road seems like Sen. Bill Brady Avenue. I thought Brady Homes were going to be developed along the road. It is a nice exit with the U. of I. promintly displayed. It took an effort by Sen. Brady to get the money allocated from the state budget to create the exit. Now, it is a route for big trucks. Maybe, a super station for truckers will develop there now instead of Brady Homes?
