Urbana police seek third person for carjacking

URBANA — Two Urbana teens are being held at the Champaign County Jail following a hijacking of a vehicle over the weekend in Urbana.

Meanwhile, Urbana police continue to look for a third person in connection with the carjacking.

Robert Brown, 17, who listed an address in the 500 block of South Dodson Drive, Urbana, and Dawyn Kennedy, 16, who listed an address in the 2700 block of East Illinois Street, Urbana, both pleaded innocent on Monday to aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony.

Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis said the 16-year-old is being charged as an adult because the offense of aggravated vehicular hijacking is automatically treated as an adult offense under Illinois law.

Judge Richard Klaus set bond for both teens at $100,000. They are next scheduled to appear in court on July 31.

According to an Urbana police report, a 28-year-old man was sitting in a car at the in the parking lot of the Phillips 66 gas station at 1511 E. Washington St. at 10:35 p.m. Friday, when three men approached him. One of the men displayed a gun, and they demanded his car.

After the victim got out of the car, the three men all got into the car and drove away.

Urbana police then found the hijacked car in the 1000 block of Lierman Avenue at about 11:40 p.m., with both Brown and Kennedy in the car, according to the report.

Brown and Kennedy both got out of the car and began to run away. Police chased them, captured them in the 900 block of Lierman Avenue, arrested them and took them to jail.

Urbana Police Sgt. Dan Morgan said police were still looking for the third carjacker on Monday evening. A description of the man was not available.

Persons with information about the incident are asked to call Urbana police at 384-2320.

The two who got arrested obviously know the third perp.  Ms. Reitz should offer the following to them....cough up the name or face the maximum penalty possible, no other deal.   All this bull about "no snitches" needs to end, as all it does is reinforce current perceptions that people have towards the segments of the population who follow that "code".
