DANVILLE — This year, Danville Area Community College's College for Kids is expanding to include new classes and a special program for young students.
The "Just for Me" mini-program was designed specifically for students entering the first or second grades.
The first session, which runs Monday through Friday, is filled already, organizers said. But there are still openings available in the second session, which runs July 9-13.
One class in the second session is Puppet Creations, held 8:30 to 10:20 a.m. Monday through Friday. Students will unleash their creativity to make their own puppet and create a story that they will present in class.
The other class is Space Webquest, held 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students will take a journey through the Milky Way solar system visiting the planets, moon and sun and do related crafts.
Both classes will be held in Clock Tower Room 110 on DACC's main campus, 2000 E. Main St. The cost is $45 each.
Students may sign up for one or both classes. They will depart the college prior to lunch.
Now in its 32nd year, College for Kids was created to provide educational opportunities for children during the summer, and to introduce them to life on a college campus.
All classes, except for the those in the "Just for Me" mini-program, are designed for students entering third through eighth grade.
Organizers said those students still can sign up for the July 9-13 session. Some of the new classes include Popping Paper Art, Rainforest Safari, Creative Scrapbooking, Dyeing to Have Fun, Illinois "The Prairie State," Edible Art, Snack Attack, Exploring Painting, and Money, Money, Money.
Returning favorites include American Sign Language (for fifth- through eighth-graders), Amazing Adventures, Baby-sitting and First Aid, Diggin' Dinosaurs, Discover Music (for third- through fifth-graders), K-CSI (Kids Crime Scene Investigation), Lego Robotics and World Foods and Culture.
