'Illini 4000' riders reach campus on route across U.S.

The 28 University of Illinois students participating in this year's Illini 4000 ride arrived exactly on time Monday at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center in Urbana.

Jamie Kelleher, a UI senior, said the group had completed the first 1,000 miles of its cross-country bicycle ride and expected to arrive in San Francisco on Aug. 7.

The student group rides each summer to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, Kelleher said, with $115,000 raised so far this year and a five-year total of $398,000. The ride into Champaign marks the 17th day of the ride that began in New York City.

The riders post information and blog about the project at http://illini4000.org/
