Green Street to be closed from Sixth to Wright on Saturday for fest

CHAMPAIGN — City officials will close a portion of Green Street in Campustown nearly all day on Saturday for the Center City Summer Stage festival.

City planner and Champaign Center Partnership director T.J. Blakeman said Green Street between Sixth Street and Wright Street will be closed to vehicle traffic and open to pedestrians during the event. He expects it will be closed between 10 a.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday.

The Center City Summer Stage events will begin "in earnest" around 4 p.m., and a new live band will take the stage every hour between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Alcohol will be allowed on the closed portion of Green Street, which is adjacent to Murphy's Pub and Brothers Bar and Grill. Patrons of those bars will be allowed to take their drinks outside, Blakeman said.

Blakeman said area businesses have scheduled events, too. For example, Fighting Illini head football coach Tim Beckman will be signing autographs at Gameday Spirit and Panera Bread will be hosting a "bagel toss."

"A whole bunch of places are having things down there," Blakeman said.

Visitors can park for free at Lot J, just west of the festival on Green Street.

Ever wonder why people get peppered sprayed in campus town?  Maybe, it is the drunken crowds?  This event looks like an accident ready to happen.  The bars will make money though.  Hopefully, the additional taxes gained will cover the extra cost for law enforcement security.  Wonder what the Champaign Mayor / Liquor Commissioner thinks about it?

That's ding dang right. Everyone who's been pepper sprayed downtown has been pepper sprayed only because they were drunk and I BLAME THE MAYOR!!! Let's make Champaign a dry county again. Prohibition will solve all our problems.

I don't "suggest removal" to deflect criticism.  At least; your not playing Steven Colbert in your response.  Whether the other commentor who criticized you withdrew their comment, or the N-G removed it is unknown.  You do confuse some in your comments.  If you say that you did not "suggest removal", that is fine.
