No one hurt in apartment building fire on Champaign's west side

CHAMPAIGN — No one was hurt in a Sunday morning fire that damaged an apartment building at the intersection of John Street and Mattis Avenue.

Firefighters were called just after 8 a.m., said Champaign fire Capt. David Ferber. When they arrived, a wooden deck was on fire.

Some of the damage extended up the siding on the exterior of the building at 1815 W. John St. The damage was valued at $9,000.

It took about an hour to get the fire completely under control, Ferber said. As of Sunday evening, investigators had yet to determine a cause for the fire.
