Man arrested for shoplifting faces drug, burglary charges

URBANA — A Champaign man arrested Friday night for allegedly trying to shoplift liquor has been charged with other crimes.

Torrell C. Jones, 22, who listed addresses in the 1800 block of Melanie Lane and the 400 block of West Springfield Avenue, was arraigned Monday for possession with intent to deliver a look-alike substance, theft, possession of a controlled substance and residential burglary.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Jones was arrested at the County Market at 1819 S. Philo Road, U, about 10 p.m. Friday after he allegedly tried to steal a bottle of brandy.

On him, police found a bag containing white powder that appeared to be cocaine but did not test positive for it. They also found about 40 prescription pills of different kinds on him, Morgan said.

When police ran a check on Jones, they learned that a warrant for his arrest had been issued about a month earlier charging him with the Sept. 20 residential burglary of an apartment in the 200 block of East White Street in Champaign.

Champaign police Sgt. Dave Griffet said in that case, the victim was home and heard a noise. He opened his bedroom door and saw three men in his apartment. They ran. Jones was linked to the crime through DNA extracted from a shirt that was dropped in the path of the burglars' flight, Griffet said.

Jones remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $40,000 bond. He's due back in court Sept. 4.
