No serious injuries in four-car wreck in Urbana

URBANA — No one was seriously injured in a four-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon in Urbana that blocked traffic for about a half hour.

Urbana police Lt. Bob Fitzgerald said Lee Edward Thornton, 23, of Bondville, was driving his car west in the 1100 block of East University Avenue about 3:45 p.m. when he apparently didn't notice a car in front of him that had slowed to make a turn.

Thornton's car hit the rear of that car, pushing that car into the eastbound lanes of University. An eastbound pickup truck swerved to miss the car that had been hit and in the process struck another car that was beside him heading east.

Fitzgerald said police had to close all four lanes of University for a couple of blocks for about 30 minutes to investigate the accident and clear the vehicles.

He said none of the people involved reported injuries at the scene.

Thornton was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
