URBANA — Urbana police received a report Thursday evening from a boy in southeast Urbana Thursday evening who said he was approached by two men in a car, one of whom reportedly got out and ran after him.
Lt. Bryant Seraphin said police were called to the area of Cottage Grove Avenue and Brighton Drive about 5:50 p.m.
An 11-year-old boy living there told police he was walking his dog in the 1300 block of Mitchem Drive near Vawter Street when a white car pulled up near him.
The boy said there were two white men in the car, which he described as dented and rusty with a plastic garbage bag over the rear driver’s window. Another person who told police he saw the car reported it had oversized rear wheels.
The boy reported that the passenger, who appeared to be around 20, with short hair, wearing shorts, and athletic shoes with duct tape on them, got out and ran after him. The boy headed for home and ran to his grandfather who was in his yard. Seraphin said the boy reported that the car followed.
Detective Dave Smysor said he re-interviewed the boy Friday and learned that the man who got out of the car said something to him like, “Come here, little boy.”
The boy’s grandfather saw the car drive by but wasn’t paying close attention to it, Smysor said.
Seraphin said the incident did not appear to be related to three reports taken in late May, late June, and early July by Champaign and Mahomet police of a man exposing himself to children.
Police ask anyone with information on this to call Crimestoppers at 373-8477 or Urbana police at 384-2320.
