Vermilion tax bills just about ready

DANVILLE — For those eager to pay their property taxes, the Vermilion County treasurer's office will be taking all the bills to the post office for mailing on Tuesday, according to county Treasurer Sue Stine.

Taxpayers have been calling Stine's office this month asking why they haven't received their bills, which Stine said are about two weeks late compared with last year when they were mailed in the last three days of June.

"People are concerned that they have been lost in the mail," Stine said of the callers.

She said the process is about two weeks behind, because the village of Tilton expanded its Tax Increment Financing district, which affects property tax bills, and that change required the Vermilion County clerk's office to do a lot of research on properties and recoding of information.

"There was a lot of research and work that put them behind, so that put us behind," Stine said.

Vermilion County Clerk Lynn Foster told county board members at Tuesday night's meeting that an outside attorney hired by the village of Tilton made some mistakes in regard to the TIF and that created more work for the clerk's office and delayed the county clerk's part of the bill preparation process.

Stine said property taxes can be paid in one payment or in two installments with the first due Aug. 17 and the second due Sept. 7. She said payments can be made by mail, at any bank in the county, at the treasurer's office in the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex, 6 N. Vermilion St., Danville, or online by going to the county web site at
