Effingham man dies following ATV accident

URBANA — An Effingham man who had been involved in a two-vehicle all-terrain-vehicle accident died Monday morning in Urbana.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Jesse Kinkelaar, 19, died at 9 a.m. Monday in the surgical intensive care unit at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Northrup said Mr. Kinkelaar died from traumatic brain injuries he received in the crash.

No autopsy will be performed, according to Northrup, but an inquest may be held at a later date.

The death is being investigated by the Effngham County sheriff's office and the Champaign County coroner's office.

According to a sheriff's office report, Mr. Kinkelaar has been driving an ATV on 2000th Avenue near 1150th Street northwest of Effingham at about 9 p.m. Sunday when the four-wheeler hit the back of a second ATV driven by Jennifer Thoele, 19, of Effingham. All four people in the two ATVs were ejected from the vehicles.

Mr. Kinkelaar was airlifted to Carle. A passenger in his ATV, Morgan Slifer, 18, of Effingham, was taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham and later transferred to Carle, where she was listed in fair condition on Monday night.

Thoele and a passenger in her ATV, Mark Mathis, 19, of Shumway, were taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Their conditions were not available on Monday night.

No tickets had been issued as of Monday night.
