Man arrested for residential burglaries in Urbana

URBANA — A man who police say took items on multiple occasions from one home in Urbana and stored them in a vacant home that he also broke into is being held at the Champaign County Jail following his arrest over the weekend.

Kenneth Watson, 22, pleaded innocent on Monday to two counts of residential burglary.

Watson told police he is homeless, but the state's attorney's office listed a home for him in Dolton, Ill.

According to Urbana police, several burglaries had been previously reported in recent weeks in a home in the 900 block of Linview Avenue, Urbana.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, a neighbor saw some new damage to that home and called police.

When officers arrived, they saw a man, later identified as Watson, jumping out of a window in the home and running away.

Police chased him, caught him about two blocks west of the home and arrested him.

Following the arrest, Watson admitted taking items from the home on previous occasions and storing them in a vacant home that he had broken into in the 800 block of Sunset Drive.

Police went to the home on Sunset Drive and found a variety of items that has been reported missing in previous residential burglaries, including some electronic games, a musical instrument, a picture frame, jewelry, a laptop computer and a television.

Watson's next court appearance was set for Aug. 7.
