Police seek help solving fatal shooting

CHAMPAIGN — Police need help solving a fatal shooting that took place on Independence Day in northwest Champaign.

According to a police report, officers were called to the intersection of Thornton Drive and Cruising Lane, in the Garden Hills area of Champaign, at 10:24 p.m. July 4 after receiving a report of shots fired in the area.

When police arrived, they found Desirae Austin, 20, lying in the intersection with a gunshot wound. Ms. Austin was taken to the emergency room at Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
