Urbana man accused of stabbing
URBANA — An Urbana man who got into an argument with another, apparently over beer, has been charged with allegedly stabbing another man.
Martriano Zarate, 44, who listed an address in the Gabe's Place Apartments in the 1500 block of East Washington Street, was charged Monday with aggravated battery for allegedly stabbing a man in the chest Sunday evening.
Urbana police investigator Matt Rivers said a group of people were having a get-together in the common area outside the apartment complex about 6:20 p.m. when Zarate apparently helped himself to a beer. When another man suggested that if Zarate was going to partake, he also needed to contribute, an argument started.
A 40-year-old man who also lived in the complex ended up being stabbed three times with a pocket knife.
He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment and was admitted. There was no information available on him Tuesday.
Rivers said the pocket knife was recovered.
Zarate remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $50,000 bond. He is due back in court Aug. 28.
