Work planned on area streets, I-74

Seasonal construction work on area streets means some street closures beginning this week.

As part of Champaign's annual concrete street maintenance project, the concrete pavement at the intersection of Research Road, Newmark Drive and Newton Drive will be replaced. The intersection will be closed beginning Wednesday and should be reopened Monday, Aug. 13.

Upon reconstruction of the intersection, the contractor will continue work to the west and south on Research Road, to complete work that was started last year.

The work involves replacement of the existing concrete pavement, storm sewer improvements and lawn restoration.

In Urbana, the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District's contractor Insituform will be doing sewer lining as part of the district's annual sanitary interceptor maintenance program.

That means portions of Springfield Avenue and Main Street will have to be shut down to through traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday and continuing through 5 p.m. Aug. 1.

During the cleaning and lining work:

— Springfield Ave will be closed to through traffic from Birch to Race Street.

— Main Street will be closed to through traffic from McCullough to Race Street.

— Eastbound traffic on Springfield Avenue and Main Street will be detoured to Elm Street and Race Street.

— Westbound traffic on Main Street will be detoured to Green Street and Coler Avenue.

Local businesses along Springfield and Main will be open but there will be no through traffic on Springfield and Main between Tuesday, July 24, and Wednesday, Aug. 1.

On-street parking will be available to local traffic during the closure.

Interstate 74 work

Meanwhile, drivers should expect lane closures on Interstate 74 this week as workers replace reflective pavement markings on the highway between Interstate 57 and University Avenue.

The $200,000 Illinois Department of Transportation project is part of a five-county effort to replace the reflectors that distinguish lane lines, according to a press release. The Champaign County work is scheduled to begin on Monday and be finished by Friday.

Drivers are asked to slow down, obey traffic signs and drive carefully.
