Man charged for apartment break-ins
URBANA — A Chicago man was arraigned Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court for two break-ins that occurred last fall in north Champaign.
Shamari Sims, 20, was charged in June with two counts of residential burglary alleging break-ins at two different apartments at University Village Apartments, 2001 Moreland Boulevard, C. Both burglaries happened Oct. 15.
Several items, including laptop computers, televisions, jewelry, electronic games, speakers and food were stolen.
A Champaign police report revealed that police found many of the stolen items in another apartment in the complex. Talking to people that lived there, police were led to a group of men, including Sims, as their suspects.
Warrants were issued in June for him and three others.
Only one of the others accused has been located. Rakeem Orange, 20, of Country Club Hills, was arraigned June 22 on the same two counts off residential burglary as Sims. He is due back in court Aug. 21.
Sims is due back in court Aug. 7 with a lawyer.
If convicted of residential burglary, the men face a mandatory prison term of between four and 15 years.
