Scout wants to improve access to veterans monument

Willie Campbell has undertaken an ambitious project.

Campbell, a sophomore at St. Joseph-Ogden High School, is raising money for a 300-foot sidewalk across the southern end of the high school lawn. There will be a 10-foot extension going up to the veterans monument.

Campbell has been working on the project, for his Eagle Scout rank, for more than a year, he said.

He is a member of Troop 40.

"I got my inspiration at the Veteran's Day dedication ceremony at the memorial a few years ago," Campbell said. "I noticed that there were many senior citizens in attendance. It occurred to me that somebody using a walker or in a wheelchair would have difficulty reaching the Veterans Memorial."

Campbell decided to do something about the situation.

"The project is to help seniors and the disabled access the monument," Campbell said.

Campbell said the village has donated $4,000 for the project.

Several companies and individuals have donated time and materials.

However, to complete the project Campbell needs to raise $2,500. He said the community seems to be supportive of the project and he has already collected $400.

Construction on the project has already started and Campbell has already held one fundraiser to raise money.

Those wishing to donate to the project should send checks made out to Troop 40 Veterans Sidewalk Project to 1704 E. Grand Avenue St. Joseph, IL 61873.

The project is to be completed this summer.
