State OKs United Samaritans purchase of surgery center
DANVILLE - Provena United Samaritans Medical Center officials expect to close next week on the purchase of the outpatient surgery center known as Danville HealthCare.
The Illinois Health and Facilities Planning Board this week approved Provena's application to transfer ownership of the surgery center in north Danville to Provena.
Provena plans to close the facility at 26 W. West Newell Road, for a short time for renovations and reopen within two weeks with a new look and a new name, ACCESS. That stands for "Ambulatory Care Center for Excellence in Surgical Services," according to a news release from Provena on Friday. A public grand opening is being planned for September.
Mike Brown, chief executive officer of Provena United Samaritans, said in the news release that the purchase will provide better access for patients and has the potential to help attract new physicians. He added that it's "about having surgery in an easily accessible and comfortable environment, as well as providing an excellent facility in which physicians can practice medicine."
According to the release, most of the current employees of Danville HealthCare are being offered employment with the new center and will be extended additional benefits. About 70 percent of the procedures currently performed there are eye surgeries as well as some podiatry and gastroenterology procedures. Current physicians plan to continue to perform those procedures at ACCESS, and Provena is inviting other physicians to use the facility for procedures including plastic surgery, ear, nose and throat and gynecology procedures.
Brown said in the news release that there are visiting specialists who currently have office hours in Danville but take patients outside the market for procedures. "Being able to offer those procedures here is better for the physician and the patient, and it gives the physician an opportunity to grow his or her practice even more in the region," he said in the release.
The new facility's medical executive committee will be Dr. David Dillman, Dr. Carmen Rocco and Dr. Terence Young, and the facility will retain its existing phone number, 446-1400.
