Woman injured in van rollover on I-57

RANTOUL — A Carbondale woman was injured Tuesday morning after she fell asleep at the wheel of her van, causing it to roll over several times on Interstate 57.

Illinois State Police at Pesotum said the accident happened on I-57 northbound near Rantoul at 10:24 a.m.

Jan P. Muhammad, 57, was driving in the right lane when she fell asleep, ran off the road to the left and entered the center median. The van went through the median and onto the southbound side of the interstate, where Muhammad then overcorrected to the right and went back into the median.

The vehicle then rolled over several times, coming to rest on its top.

Muhammad was wearing a seat belt but had to be cut out of the van, police said.

Her passenger, Gregory O. Muhammad, 61, of Carbondale, was also wearing a seat belt. Police said he was not injured.

Jan Muhammad was issued a ticket for improper lane usage. She was treated and released from Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
