Lewis-Smallwood misses discus mark

LONDON - Gia Lewis-Smallwood of Champaign won't make it to the finals of the women's discus in the London Olympics.

Lewis-Smallwood, a Champaign Centennial and University of Illinois graduate, had a best throw of 61.44 meters in Friday's qualifying round. She scratched on her first attempt and her other throw was 61.25 meters.

The cutoff for qualifying was 63 meters for the field of 35.

The U.S. athlete with the longest throw was Stephanie Brown Trafton of California, in fifth place overall with a best of 64.89 meters.

The best throw in the qualifying round was by Yarelys Barrios of Cuba, with a distance of 65.94 meters.

The finals are Saturday.
