Head of local Sikh group says shooting should be call to action

The leader of a Sikh organization at the University of Illinois said Sunday's temple shooting in Wisconsin shows how important it is to raise awareness about religious beliefs.

Irwinpreet Singh, president of the UI's Sikh Student Association, called the shooting a senseless and shocking act of violence, and he said when the school year gets going later this month, the Sikh Student Association plans to spread the word about what the religion stands for.

Singh said he credits the UI student body for being very tolerant of other religions during his time on campus.  He said although there are no Sikh temples in Champaign-Urbana, there are a handful of Sikh families in the area, who he said are a close-knit group.
