Fundraiser set for King School in Urbana

URBANA — Piato Cafe in Urbana's Lincoln Square Village is hosting a fundraiser Thursday to raise money to buy school supplies for students in need at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.

The fundraiser, a $5 buffet, will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lincoln Square Food Court, and all proceeds will be used to buy school supplies.

Head Chef Kelly Jo Lamb is hoping to fill 300 backpacks for King students this year with notebooks, crayons, pencils, glue, scissors, erasers, folders, rulers and more. Donations of school supplies and money will be also accepted during the fundraiser.

Last year, the cafe provided more than 100 backpacks for students.

Lamb is also asking for volunteers to stuff backpacks at 2 p.m. Aug. 15 in the King Elementary multipurpose room. It's expected to take an hour.

The backpacks will be delivered at King's Welcome Back to School Night Aug. 17.

For more information about how you can donate or volunteer, contact Jennifer Ivory-Tatum, King principal, at 384-3675 or Kelly Jo Lamb at Piato Cafe at 344-9025.
