UPDATED: At least two injured in shooting reported in Urbana
UPDATED 8:10 p.m. Wednesday.
URBANA — Three people have been arrested and a fourth person is wanted by police following the shooting of at least two men Wednesday morning in Urbana.
According to a police report, officers were called to an apartment building at 2008 Vawter Street at 10:54 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of shots fired there.
Police discovered that two men had been shot near the northwest corner of the building in a courtyard.
One of the men was identified as Deandre Fairman, 26, who listed an address in Chicago. The other victim was a 28-year-old Urbana man who was not identified by police. Both men were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment of lower extremity wounds.
Police went to Carle after Fairman’s wound had been treated and arrested him at 3:03 p.m. Wednesday for the aggravated discharge of a firearm. He was taken to the Champaign County Jail.
The second man, who was still undergoing treatment Wednesday night at Carle, had not been arrested as of Wednesday night.
Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said police learned that Tyshonda Bell, 20, of Champaign, and James Wesley Guy, 23, of Rantoul, got into an argument shortly before the shooting, and the argument soon turned into a fight.
By the time the fight ended, other people, described by police as “affiliated with both sides of the original fight,” arrived at the scene.
“The fight between Bell and Guy precipitated other subjects coming to the area,” Seraphin said.
This time handguns were brandished, and two people fired shots, leading to injuries to Fairman and the second shooting victim.
No information was available Wednesday night on whether police recovered any guns or the total number of shots fired.
Bell was given a notice to appear for possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver.
Seraphin said Guy is wanted for aggravated discharge of a firearm. He said police believe that Guy was hit by gunfire during the shooting and may be injured as a result.
“He was observed limping from the crime scene, and he was holding his hand against his thigh,” Seraphin said.
Police described Guy as a 155-pound black male. He is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with black hair, brown eyes and “a chubby build.”
Seraphin said Guy was last seen in a brown pickup truck driving north on Philo Road.
Another person, Nicole Dunner, 23, of Urbana, was arrested on an outstanding Champaign County warrant for failure to appear for misuse of a credit card.
Persons with information about the incident are asked to call Urbana police at 384-2320. Callers may remain anonymous by calling Champaign County Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS.
