Champaign man arrested near youth talent show
URBANA— A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on a drug charge following his arrest near a youth talent show on Saturday afternoon.
Cortez Wright, 31, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Williamsburg Drive, Champaign, pleaded innocent on Monday to unlawful possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance.
According to police and state's attorney's offices in Champaign and McDonough counties, a warrant had been issued in McDonough County for Wright's arrest for failure to pay his fine from a 2009 conviction for obstructing justice.
A Champaign police officer was patrolling the 600 block of East Eureka Street at 5:22 p.m. Saturday when he saw Wright near a youth talent show for the CU Day at Douglass Park.
Since the officer knew that Wright was wanted for the McDonough County warrant, he arrested Wright.
When the officer searched Wright, he found one large baggie holding 13 smaller knotted baggies containing a total of 13 rocks of suspected heroin in Wright's pants pocket.
The suspected heroin weighed a total of 5.1 grams (about 0.18 ounce), according to the report.
Wright's bond was set at $155,000. His next court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 21.
