Man in custody faces new car break-in charge

URBANA — A Chicago man already in police custody, accused of burglary to vehicles in Champaign, has had an additional criminal case filed against him.

Christopher Vaughn, 31, was charged Tuesday with another count of burglary for a June 27 break-in to a car in the 800 block of Burkwood Drive in Urbana.

Urbana police investigator Dave Smysor said in that car burglary, a woman's Kindle Fire computer tablet and cash had been stolen.

The woman alerted police on Aug. 2 that she had located her computer tablet at a pawn shop in Champaign. Urbana police investigated and learned it was Vaughn who had pawned the item.

Smysor said an officer talked to him in the county jail Monday and Vaughn reported that he had pawned it for a friend. Smysor said the friend was also interviewed but denied that was the case.

Vaughn was already being held in lieu of $50,000 bond for burglary and resisting a peace officer in connection with two car break-ins on July 30 on Tremont Street and Mimosa Drive in Champaign. He is due to appear in court on those charges Sept. 25.
