Man hospitalized after shooting

DANVILLE – Danville police are investigating a shooting that sent a Danville man to the hospital early this morning.
Department of Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said police were called to an area in the 900 to 1000 blocks of Franklin Street shortly after midnight, responding to reports of possible shots fired. At the scene, a police officer checking the area was approached in an alleyway by a 27-year-old Danville man who said he had been shot.
“Preliminary information gathered indicated the man was in front of his residence in the 1000 block of Franklin when he was approached by a group of individuals,” Thomason said.
According to the victim, one of the men began firing a weapon, Thomason said. The victim ran away and came upon the officer checking the area, according to Thomason.
The victim was taken by Medix ambulance to an Urbana hospital, where he underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition. No others were reported injured, and police are pursuing leads in the case, Thomason said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crimestoppers at 446-8477.
