Second arrest made in Mahomet arsons, vehicle burglaries

MAHOMET  - A Mahomet man allegedly involved in setting fire to two camper trailers in the village Monday night and a series of vehicle burglaries that happened earlier is in police custody.

Mahomet Police Chief Mike Metzler said that Colby M. Cohoon, 18, who listed addresses in rural Fisher and in the 200 block of Vermillion in Mahomet, was arrested about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Police had linked him to fires set in camper trailers on Penny Lane and in the 800 block of Riverside Drive in Mahomet that were determined to have been intentionally set around 11 p.m. Monday. Metzler said Cohoon was also allegedly involved in several vehicle burglaries that have occurred in Mahomet in the past week.

A co-defendant, Adrian D. Foster, 21, of Mahomet, was charged Tuesday with only a single count of burglary alleging he broke in a car on Windwood Court on Aug. 9. Police arrested him as he ran Monday night from the scene of another vehicle burglary that had occurred in the 1200 block of Vista View Court. They knew then that a second man was involved but he got away.

Metzler said Cohoon was taken into custody on preliminary charges of arson and burglary and an outstanding warrant from Ford County. As he was being taken to the county jail in Urbana, he struggled with officers and kicked out the window of a police squad car.

The state's attorney's office will decide what charges to file against Cohoon later today.

Put him away for a long time! We have been violated by these criminals and nobody should ever have to worry about someone outside their house lighting fires! Good ridence

For one of these suspects, this is the second time starting things on fire in Mahomet - second time being caught anyway. So far no one has been hurt or killed, and let's hope no one ever does.
