Man sought in attempted child abduction in Paxton
PAXTON — Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who tried to abduct a child Sunday afternoon.
Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane said the incident occurred at 2:45 p.m. near Washington and Prospect streets, alongside Glen Cemetery on Paxton's southeast side.
Bane said a young girl, who was walking home from the city swimming pool, saw a northbound car on Washington Street stop near her. The driver said something to her that she could not quite make out.
"She went closer to hear what he had to say, and he told her to get into the car," Bane said. "She then took off running, went home and reported it to her mom."
The child's mother called police.
The vehicle was described as an "older, rough-looking, possibly dark blue four-door car," Bane said. The driver was described as an older white man with gray hair and a long gray beard who was wearing a gray Bud Light T-shirt. The vehicle was last seen headed west on Summer Street.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Ford County Crimestoppers at 784-4173 or Paxton police at 379-4315. Informants may remain anonymous, and a cash reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
