Champaign police investigate two incidents, including an attempted abduction
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are investigating an attempted abduction of a girl and a second incident involving a boy.
Neither child was reported hurt.
According to Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn, a fifth-grade girl reported being approached by a man at the intersection of North Fifth Street and East Columbia Avenue while she was waiting for a school bus at 7:40 a.m. Thursday.
According to the girl, the man asked her if she needed a ride. After she told him no, the man drove past her a second time, asked once again if she needed a ride and told her to get into the car.
The girl said, “No,” and began to run toward the home of someone she knew.
As she was running, she thought she heard the man say, “I’m going to come after you!”
The girl safely made it to the home.
The driver was described as white man in his late 20s or early 30s, with short blond hair, a light brown beard and a mustache. He was wearing a black T-shirt and was driving a small, four-door silver car with a white tiger sticker in the right side of the windshield.
“She also observed a keychain shaped like a finger or with the picture of a finger hanging from the trunk,” Dunn said.
Dunn said Unit 4 school administration contacted police after learning about the incident Thursday afternoon.
Then, at 3:40 p.m. Thursday, a 7-year-old boy said he was approached by two men riding a black pickup truck as the boy was walking near Williamsburg and Thornton drives.
The boy said the men made comments to him, but he didn’t clearly understand what they said.
After the truck drove away, it later returned to the area. The boy then ran away.
The driver of the truck was described as a white male with short blond hair. He was wearing glasses and a dark green shirt.
The passenger of the truck was described as a white male with blue eyes and short blond hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt.
Dunn said Champaign police believe the two incidents may be related.
