Fire damages garage at Urbana duplex

URBANA - The smell of smoke alerted an Urbana couple to a fire that heavily damaged their attached garage early Thursday.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said about 2:15 a.m. Spring Pirtle and Raymond Hoeft smelled smoke at their duplex at 2409 1/2 Brownfield Road in northeast Urbana. The couple went outside to find smoke coming from the garage, which is used as a living area and for storage.

The fire was contained to that area but there was smoke damage throughout their home.

Carroll Fire Protection District firefighters put out the fire. They were still investigating the cause early Thursday, Vercler said, but it did not appear to be suspicious.

Damage was estimated at $10,000, Vercler said.

Darcy Derr, the neighbor living on the other side of the duplex, said that Pirtle and Hoeft woke her, her husband, her mother-in-law and their two dogs to alert them to the fire. They all got out safely as well. Their half of the duplex was not damaged, Derr said, beyond smelling of smoke and a bit of water in their entry way.
