Three charged with burglary at former air base

RANTOUL — Three people have been charged with burglary for allegedly breaking into a vacant building on the former Chanute Air Force Base and stealing copper.

Rantoul police detective Rodney Sullivan said a concerned citizen who had seen the same car in the area three nights in a row called police just before 11 p.m. Thursday.

The citizen reported seeing three people get out of a car just south of the Prairie Village retirement community. One had a backpack.

The citizen lost sight of the trio but called police, who found them near a vacant building in the 200 block of Wiseman Street, on the former base.

Sullivan said the trio told police they were out jogging. Police checked the building and found it had been forcibly entered and that there were stacks of copper pipes inside.

Sullivan said officers also found a blade for a saw, other tools and gloves along the path where the three had been seen.

Arrested and charged with burglary and theft were Verles D. Bolton Sr., 45, of the 500 block of West Beardsley Avenue, Champaign, and Krystal Malone, 27, of the 400 block of Dodson Drive, Urbana.

Deonta Rozier, 17, of the 1000 block of West Bradley Avenue, Champaign, was charged with burglary.

All three were told by Judge Rich Klaus to be back in court Oct. 2.

Klaus set bond for Bolton, who has several prior convictions, at $15,000, and at $10,000 for Rozier and $5,000 for Malone.
