CHAMPAIGN — Salt & Light, a local faith-based agency that ministers to families in need, will hold a cash collection drive next month to help pay for the groceries it supplies to hundreds of families.
Collection cans will begin appearing at local businesses Sept. 4, said Michelle Van Wynen, executive assistant for the organization.
"We have 115 businesses participating in Champaign County, and we hope to have more," she said.
The need for food for local families is great, she said.
Money donations help the organization feed more people than direct food donations, Van Wynen said, because Salt & Light buys food through the Eastern Illinois Food Bank and the dollars buy much more there than those spent at retail groceries.
Just $25 will feed three families for one week, she said.
Salt & Light, located at 1512 W. Anthony Drive, C, is suppling groceries to 350 to 360 families in Champaign County on a regular basis. And the agency doesn't turn anyone away who arrives for grocery distributions, Van Wynen said.
