UPDATED: Taffies Restaurant kitchen damaged in fire
CHAMPAIGN – Fire officials say the cause of a Sunday night fire that has shut down a west Champaign restaurant is undetermined.
Taffies Restaurant is closed until further notice following a fire that damaged kitchen equipment. Officials estimate the damage at $35,000.
No one was hurt and the fire was contained to the kitchen, according to a Champaign Fire Department press release.
Firefighters were called at 10:23 p.m. Sunday to the restaurant at 301 S. Mattis Ave., where flames were visible through the front windows and smoke was exiting through the vents on the roof.
Champaign fire Lt. Jeff Lattz said it appeared that the fire started near one of the fryers. Some of the kitchen equipment sustained smoke and heat damage.
The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District has been notified and will be inspecting the restaurant on Monday, according to the release.
The Pomonis family had owned Taffies until this month when its general manager, Jeremy Van Matre, bought the restaurant.
